Hargeysa, Somaliland, October 8, 2005 (SL Times) – Fifty candidates have been declared winners so far in the Somaliland September 29 parliamentary elections following the release of interim voting results in the 4 regions of Sahil, Awdal, Sanag and Togdheer. Until now the interim results disclosed were not disputed by none of the other 100 candidates who also contested election in the above 4 regions. The results were also generally accepted by the 3 political parties; UDUB, KULMIYE and UCID. However the announcement of voting results in the Hargeysa region was delayed as a result of recounting request from the ruling UDUB party. The two opposition parties agreed only to a verification of compliance with voting and counting procedures by the ballot station staff and party agents. But as the process was to involve most of Hargeysa region’s 337 ballot boxes, interim results were not expected to be announced before next Monday. Sool results were delayed by an inter-party dispute involving 2 candidates from each of UDUB and KULMIYE. Each two candidates from the same party accused one another of using foul play to steal the vote for himself. At the center of dispute were 3 ballot boxes that the regional electoral commission decided to send to the national electoral commission headquarters in Hargeysa for counting. The 3 ballot boxes arrived in NEC office earlier this week and results of voting in Sool is expected to be announced at anytime. Among the winners are 2 women; one each from Awdal and Sanag. “I’m very happy that my long efforts and dedication have finally paid off” said Ikran Haji Daud who made history as the first Somaliland woman candidate to be declared as winner of a contested parliamentary seat. The following tables show the names of 50 candidates who won seats in the Somaliland House of Representatives and the number of votes each one of them received as per region. However the results are not final until endorsed by the NEC.
