| Somali Gunmen Hijack Kenyans
Nairobi, Kenya, Oct 11, 2005 (The Standard) Another ship with nine Kenyan seamen aboard is feared to have been hijacked by Somali gunmen.
Seafarers Assistance Programme Coordinator, Mr. Andrew Mwangura, yesterday said the vessel, MV Torgelow, was hijacked near El Maan port in Somalia, the same area where eight Kenyans abducted in another ship three months ago were released last week.
Mwangura said MV Torgelow, which belongs to the same company that owns the recently released MV Semlow, was carrying general cargo belonging to Somali businessmen.
The captain is Sri Lankan and the other nine seamen all Kenyans. Mwangura said the ship was also carrying oil, foodstuff and water, which were to be given to the recently released Kenyans, who are still at El Maan port waiting for MV Semlow to be discharged before coming home.
In the latest incident, the ship left Mombasa last Friday with the expectation of docking at El Maan port on Sunday but it was hijacked by pirates.
Mwangura appealed for calm among the hostages’ families, saying the concerned parties and Somali businessmen would seek their release. The earlier ship was captured by pirates on June 27 at Haradheere, north-east of Mogadishu. The former hostages, a Tanzanian, a Sri Lankan and the eight Kenyans, are still at the port after a stand-off between parties delayed their ship from off-loading the cargo.
The World Food Programme-chartered vessel is carrying 850 metric tonnes of rice meant for tsunami victims in Somalia.

The Polling Results Must Be Respected
Editorial
Now that the final results of the September 29, 2005 parliamentary elections have been announced by the National Electoral Commission, all the participants in last month’s democratic race including all the political party candidates and their supporters are expected to accept the outcome.
Despite numerous administrative, logistical and technical shortcomings, the NEC has conducted a very successful election. Counting of ballots has been transparent to the extent that when individual political parties or candidates requested recounting of votes cast for the hotly contested Hargeysa seats, the NEC obliged by allowing a lengthy and rigorous verification of almost the region’s entire 337 ballot boxes.
Somaliland Election: An Account Of A Close Observer
By Mohamed Xariirad
The people of Somaliland, regardless of the naysayer apprehension that there would be no fair and free election in this internationally isolated infant nation has demonstrated a will of steel rooted on their determination to reclaim their independence from the quagmire in Somalia proper. They put their best foot forward to elect newly minted parliament soon to be sworn in. Now, that it is in place, the whole nation is eagerly expecting it to deliver the promised recognition and prosperity, not withstanding their party colors and tribal affiliation.

Everyone has a right to join a political party that peacefully contests elections in a free and fair way. Whether that political party is headed by a hydra headed monsters or whether their rank and file are gluttonous and greedy corrupters of the national weal, it is the responsibility of the opposing parties that feel they are righteous angels of liberation, to explain and tell the people about these issues and ask them to vote for their party in a given election.

The Ten Most Important Things Somaliland Should Do To Strengthen Democracy And Gain International Recognition
By Faysal Diriye, Ottawa, Canada
First at all, I will like to concur with all the recent articles congratulating the Somaliland people. Victory has always a million fathers, but only our people that chose to resolve their divergent opinions through the ballot box should be commanded for the historic election. Meanwhile if the election was history, it is also already history and we all need to look forward to the necessary steps ahead. For this purpose, here are my two cents worth opinions.

Dueling Priorities For Beijing In The Horn Of Africa
By David Shinn, Joshua Eisenman (CHINA BRIEF)
Volume 5, Issue 21, October 13, 2005 (The Jamestown Foundation) – The Horn of Africa has become an increasingly important region for China. Of the five countries—Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and Somalia/Somaliland—that constitute the Horn, Sudan looms especially large. China receives 7 percent of its oil from Sudan, has invested millions in Sudan’s oil sector, and supports Khartoum as it faces international condemnation for its handling of the crisis in Darfur. China’s engagement in tiny Djibouti and the still-struggling state of Somalia and its breakaway sister, Somaliland, is modest. Surprisingly, China’s growing ties with neighboring Ethiopia and Eritrea have thus far escaped extensive review. This analysis seeks to fill that void.

Dubai, UAE, October 8, 2005 (The Gulf News) – Ramadan is a time for spiritual reflection, prayer, doing good deeds and spending time with family and friends.
The fast is a means of spiritual cleansing as it helps teach Muslims self-discipline, self-restraint and generosity. It also reminds them of the suffering of the poor, who may rarely get to eat well.
Though children are not required to fast until they reach the age of 9, in many families younger children fast, quite often by free will.
