SANAA, Yemen, October 10, 2005 (UPI) -- Yemen denied that it smuggled arms to Somalia, stressing that it only forwarded personal weapons to the Somali authorities to support legal forces.
An official source told United Press International Monday that "within the framework of cooperation with Somalia, Yemen handed the legal government of elected President Abdullah Yusuf personal weapons in order to boost the capacities of police and enable the legitimate Somali government to restore security and order."
The source said Yemeni is helping Somalia to prevent becoming a safe haven for terrorists and extremist groups.
A U.N. report indicated last week that illegal arms are sent to Somalia from Yemen, Ethiopia and Eritrea in violation of a U.N. ban on weapons to the east African nation.
Yemen said it sent 5,000 weapons to what it called the legitimate Somali government to help it disarm militiamen and establish order and urged Arab countries to assist Somalia.
