Nairobi , Kenya , November 12, 2005 (SL Times) – EC reiterates Its Commitment to Supporting Development initiative in Somaliland.

Recent public allegations concerning the performance of the European Commission’s office in Hargeisa regrettably rest on a misconception regarding the office’s role, which is confined monitoring ongoing programmes and operational liaison tasks.

“We have no hesitation in affirming that our very substantial programme in Somaliland is being properly implemented in line with the strategy formally approved by the commission at Brussels and Nairobi level”, said Eric van der Linden, the commission’s Head of Development in Kenya. “Our field people are not involved in policy, programming, or the allocation of funds to individual projects”, he added: “We are satisfied that they are doing a good job, in line with their terms of reference”.

The Head of Delegation concluded by reiterating the Commission’s to supporting development initiatives in Somaliland . “Thanks notably to the efforts of our office in Hargeisa we have always enjoyed a sound working relationship with our partners in Somaliland ” he said: “we are confident that this misunderstanding can be speedily resolved with their help”.

EU funding managed by the Commission constitutes bye some distance the largest package of international assistance to Somaliland , notably including a significant contribution to the electoral exercise.
