Nairobi, June 1, 2004 (Standard) –The Government wants all Kenyans working with non governmental organizations operating in war-torn Somalia to immediately register with its embassy in Somalia.

Kenyan Ambassador to Somalia, Mr. Mohammed Affey, said thousands of Kenyan nationals were working with humanitarian aid organizations in most troubled parts of Somalia without the knowledge of the Government.

Affey said in future, Kenyans working with such organizations would be required to register and provide their particulars to the embassy before proceeding with their duties.

He said the culture of Kenyans seeking employment in war-torn Somalia without registering with the embassy had made it difficult for the country to identify and assist its nationals during crisis.

The envoy said currently, the Government only knows of the presence of its citizens in Somalia when they are either kidnapped or killed.

He said over 30 Kenyans on humanitarian mission in break away republic of Puntland were recently expelled by self declared authorities.

Affey was speaking to about 15 cross-border organizations working in Gedo region.
