Somali Warlord Charged Over Fight
BBC - 30 January, 2003 - Four delegates to the Somali peace talks in Kenya
have been charged with assault on a professor.
The four, including warlord Mawlid Maane, are alleged to have assaulted
Professor Mohamed Gandi earlier this week when he suggested the talks be
moved to Nairobi or Thika, near the Kenyan capital, by 1 February.

The US government of President Bush is determined to launch an
all-out military attack on Iraq any time soon, ostensibly to disarm
the regime of Saddam Hussein of weapons of mass destruction. The
Americans accuse Saddam of having developed links with Al Qa’eda
and say they have to preempt the possibility of Saddam’s dangerous
weapons of mass destruction falling in the future into the hands of
terrorist groups such as Al Qa’eda.

Fear, anarchy, and lawlessness reigned in Somalia for the last 12 years. Horror and despair have been engulfing its people; prospects of hope for peace and wind of relief are not on the horizon yet. All peace talks and reconciliation conferences held for its salvation have been doomed to failure. Governments formed in Djibouti in 1991 and 2000, headed by Ali Mahdi and Abdiqasim Salad Hassan respectively, proved to be dysfunctional.

Africa celebrated the Independence Day. Even though I was born in East
Africa I felt proud that my motherland has at last become independent.
