Addis Ababa, January 29, 2003 (The Daily Monitor): As of January 2002 there are 148,737 refugees residing in Ethiopia, according to the figures of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) 2002 Global Appeal.

On the workshop held at the Ghion Hotel on Settlement and Resettlement on Tuesday, Mr. Ilunga Ngandu Regional Liaison Representative said that there are 50,906 Somali refugees, 93,500 Sudanese refugees, 3,871 Eritrean refugees and 460 urban refugees in Ethiopia.

He said that since 1997 more than 200,000 Somali refugees have been repatriated from Ethiopia.

"Taking into the size of refugee population in the region, resettlement program, usually in the figure of few thousands per year is only offered to a relatively small group of refugees."

On the occasion Ngandu also said that since the summer of 2002 a deterioration of security as a result of tribal conflicts have been seen in Bonga, Fugnido and Dimma which are the 3 Sudanese refugee camps in the Gambella region.

The tribal conflict has also affected the Sudanese refugees - that have similar tribal composition as that in the region- with more than 40 refugees killed in November 2002, he added.
