Nairobi, July 2, 2003, (The East African Standard) - President Kibaki yesterday appointed former Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Mohammed Affey, as Kenya's Ambassador to war-torn Somalia.

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the appointment takes effect immediately.

Affey, a former MP for Mandera East constituency lost the Kanu nominations during last year's General Election.

Affey's appointment comes in the wake of peace and reconciliation talks hosted in Nairobi by Kenya under the auspices of the Inter-Governmental Authority for Development (Igad).

The talks have been going on for the last eight months.

Several presidential aspirants have so far declared their interest in the Somalia presidency.

A government of national unity is expected to be formed at the end of the talks.
