| Court Orders 3 Somali Teenagers Remanded | |||

Mathias Ringa Nairobi, July 31, 2003 (The East African Standard) - A Mombasa court has ordered that a 14-year-old girl and two others be remanded in a police station to assist Anti-Terrorism Police officers with investigations. Mombasa Chief Magistrate, Mrs Pamela Kidullah, ordered that Fardosa Muhsin, 14, Jafar Abdi, 15, and Ali Adan, 17, be remanded at Central Police Station to help with investigations into terrorism and illegal immigration syndicates. Kidullah issued the order after Prosecutor, Chief Inspector Stanley Cheruiyot, applied that the trio be remanded in custody instead of a remand children's home so as to assist with investigations into the rackets. The three were arrested by Immigration officials at Moi International Airport between July 19 and 21, this year as they were preparing to travel to France. The court heard that on July 21, this year, Fardosa was found in possession of a Kenyan passport and a forged visa to enter France. Jafar was charged with being in possession of a forged Ethiopian passport on July 19, this year and staying in Kenya illegally. And Adan was charged with being in possession of a Danish passport, which belonged to another person on July 19, this year. He was also staying in Kenya illegally. All the accused told the court they were orphans. Adan said he was a Standard 6 dropout and came to Kenya from Somalia four months ago to live with a relative at Eastleigh estate, in Nairobi. He said he was caught by Immigration officials as he was preparing to travel to France where his brother lives. Immigration officer Onyango Okal said the accused would assist ATPU with probe into illegal Somali immigrants ring. |
