European Parliament chief Pat Cox condemned Wednesday the killing of an award-winning Italian aid worker by unidentified gunmen in the self-declared republic of Somaliland.

Annalena Tonelli, 60, was murdered late on Sunday in the Somaliland town of Borama, where she had devoted more than three decades of her life to helping Somali refugees.

"A woman who shunned publicity and took no payment for her work, (Tonelli) was a symbol of courage, perseverance and hope in a war-torn region," said Cox in a statement.

Condemning her killing, he added: "Her sacrifice reminds us of those many thousands of volunteers who, in silence and without protection, dedicate their lives to helping others."
