Honorable Ambassador,
I was really shocked and saddened to hear of Mr. Richard and Mrs.
Enid Eyeington's senseless killing. It is diffcult to express my sorrow and
anger over the inhuman terrorist act against our guests
who were there helping Somaliland and its people. To the families and
friends of Mr. and Mrs. Eveington, I say please accept my deepest
sympathy for the loss of your loved ones.
This was vicious terrorist attack intended to derail Somaliland's progress,
and it’s a crime against all humanity and the perpetrators and those who
harbor them should be punished accordingly. Somaliland Authority must take
immediate action against the terrorist and punish them.
Somaliland is and will be a peaceful nation where people can live without
fear. Somaliland is committed to being peaceful, and no one will be allow
to jeopardize this.
Again to the families, and friends of the Eyeingtons, as well as the people
and government of the United Kingdom, please accept our heartfelt sympathy.

Somaliland Shall Overcome These Tragedies
By Najeeb H. Hashi
The objectives of the perpetrators of the killings of Ms Tonelli and The
Eyeingtons is to bring a halt to the progress and success made in the
diplomatic fronts by the Somaliland in the past months.
They killers are trying to export the anarchy
and instability in Somalia to neighboring countries such as Somaliland. They
thought killing innocent aid workers would hinder Somalilander’s quest for
recognition and foreign investment. The murderers want to taint Somaliland's
image and make Somaliland seem as no different than Somalia and many third
world countries for that matter.
It is obvious that these cowards will remain hiding in the shadows.
They did not kill only innocent selfless people, but they also shook our
faith in our security apparatus. They took advantage of our relaxed security
in terms of free movement of people to and from the neighboring countries,
including the influx of a large number of refugees from Somalia and Ethiopia
into Somaliland, though it has been noted that many of thes people are not
genuine refugees.
The time has come for the government and citizens of the Republic of
Somaliland to work together and act swiftly not only to catch these
criminals and bring them to a court of law, but also to take the necessary
measures for preserving their peace and stability.
Resolving these heinous crimes should be the
top priority of the Somaliland government and citizens alike. This would
require hard work and dedication from the government in partnership with the
people. It also would need a comprehensive review of the state of security
from east to west. Night curfews, arresting of suspects and remanding them
will not resolve the security challenges faced by the country for the medium
and long term. On the contrary, it might generate mistrust between the
government and the citizens which will give more ammunition to our enemies.
What we need is a re-structured security framework for the whole country
that is not in conflict with Somaliland's constitution. The government
should also seek expertise from the general public as well as externally.
Allah bless Somaliland

Somaliland Forum Statement on Richard And
Enid Eyeingtons’ Killing
SOMALILAND FORUM PRESS RELEASE 21.10.03
REF: SLF/EC-28-03/04
The Somaliland Forum, an independent organisation that represents the
Somaliland Diaspora, is sending its condolences to the family and friends
of Richard and Enid Eyeington, who were killed on Monday, 20 Oct.03 by
unidentified gunmen in the Republic of Somaliland. First and foremost, our
sympathies are with the two children and grandchildren, which Richard and
Enid have left behind. In addition, we send our condolences to the staff of
SOS Children’s Village, the organization for which Richard and Enid worked,
and the British public, in general.
The President of Somaliland, Hon Dahir Rayale Kahin, as well as the Leaders
of the two houses of Parliament have also sent their condolences to the
family and friends of the diseased; and promised to bring the perpetrators
of these heinous crimes to justice, as soon as possible. In fact, six
persons have already been arrested in connection with these murders, and we
promise to update you on the progress developments of the case.
It is indeed ironic that the British public, and also most European and
American citizens, the majority of whom have probably never heard
of Somaliland, are introduced to it in this fashion. However, we would
like to re-assure them that Somaliland is and remains a peaceful country
with hospitable people that welcome visitors and foreigners to their country
with open arms.
It has been 12 years since the Republic of Somaliland, a former British
Protectorate, reclaimed its sovereignty from the union it entered with
Somalia, a former Italian trustee. During these 12 years, while chaos and
anarchy was the norm in Somalia, Somaliland has been a peaceful and stable
country that has evolved from a primitive clan based system of governance,
to a multi-party democratic system of government. The security and safety
of visitors and foreigners has never an issue. And, as evident from the
British government's advise to its citizens on travel (that it is safe to
travel to Somaliland), hostility against foreigners has not been on the
increase in Somaliland, lately. All around the world, be it Somaliland or
Britain, there are mindless criminals who have no respect for human life.
Finally, once again, our sympathies are with the family and friends of
Richard and Enid Eyeington, especially with their two children and grand
children, and the larger family of SOS Children’s Village.
