Hargeisa (SL Times) – Somaliland Foreign Minister, Edna Adan Ismail and Commerce and Industry Minister, Mohamed Hashi Elmi, have denied that they intend to resign from President Dahir Rayale’s cabinet. The denial came following a Jamhuuriya newspaper report yesterday that the two ministers were about to resign.

According to the report, Edna Adan and Mohamed Hashi intend to resign because of policy differences with president Rayale. However when contacted last night by the Somaliland Times for a response to the report, both ministers categorically denied it as “baseless and untrue”.

The two ministers also refuted allegations that they were unhappy with President Rayale or they had policy differences with him.

“Not only that we didn’t resign, or were not intending to resign, but also we do not see any reasons why we should do so,” said Mohamed Hashi Elmi.

On her part Edna Adan said the allegations about the resignation were totally untrue. “This has been a cheap speculation and I’m happy to disappoint those who have been behind it,” she added.

Jamhuuriya also alleged in the same report that differences over policy issues existed between president Rayale and his vice-president Ahmed Yassin. The alleged row within the presidency was also cited in a number of articles published by Jamhuuriya during last month. But this was strongly denied by the Somaliland minister of Interior, Mr. Ismail Adan Osman.

The newspaper did not cite the source of its information regarding the alleged differences between Mr. Rayale and the vice-president, or the speculation that Edna Adan and Mohamed Hashi were intending to resign. However the same allegations were known to have circulated within opposition circles before being reported by Jamhuuriya.
