Cardiff , UK , December 3, 2005 (SL Times) – Julie Morgan, a British member of parliament elected from Cardiff , Wales , has sponsored an early day motion on Somaliland 's recent parliamentary elections. It is proposed in the motion that the House congratulates the people, government, political parties and Electoral Commission of Somaliland for the successful conduction of the September 29 parliamentary elections while acknowledging that president Dahir Rayale Kahin had addressed the inaugural session of the newly elected parliament and taking note of British assistance in support of the Somaliland electoral process. The motion is expected to raise awareness of British parliamentarians about Somaliland and raise this country's profile among UK politicians. A British Somalilander of the Labour party, Abdulkarim A. Adan, lobbied for the early day motion. Somalilanders form the largest minority in Wales . The first Somalilanders started arriving in Cardiff more than one hundred years ago.
Cardiff is also the home of Alun Michael (above), a British MP known for his public criticision and condemnation of the repressive policies followed by former dictator Siyad Barre against the people of Somaliland in the 1980s.
