Somali Bantu - A Lucky Few

UNHCR/B.Press - When the nation-state of Somalia collapsed into a series of warring fiefdoms in the early 1990s, hundreds of thousands of civilians fled for their lives. Two Swedish Tourists Return Home After Visit to Somaliland

Hargeisa (SL Times): Anette Gruvhagen and Lena Wingheim left Hargeisa for home on Monday after a 2 week long visit to Somaliland.

The two Swedish tourists who are medical nurses by profession came here in response to an invitation they had received from Anab Farah Ahmed who heads the Magan Maternity Clinic in Hargeisa.

Anab met Annette and Lena in Sweden when she lived there in the past. During their stay here, the two Swedish ladies visited Gabiley, Darar-weyne and Berbera port town. They also helped in the delivery of two babies at Magan Maternity Clinic.

Both Anette and Lena said they found Somalilanders very friendly as well as open-minded. "We have been surprised at how peaceful Somaliland is. It has been also amazing how everybody we have met wanted to be of help and protection to us. After what had happened to these people, it is just incredible to note that they are still optimistic and full of life," Anette Gruvhagen said.

The two Swedish tourists brought with them a donation of medical supplies for Magan Clinic.

Tony Karon: Why al-Qa’eda is Targeting Israel

Israeli pilot Rafi Marek was 90 seconds into his flight from Mombasa, Kenya, at about 3,000 ft., when he felt an unexpected thump. He thought it was the impact of a bird hitting the fuselage of his Arkia charter Boeing 757 carrying 261 Israelis home from a beach vacation. But he wondered if something far more frightening might have been after his plane when crew members spotted two white stripes of smoke streaming past the jet's tail, only 100 yards away. Two shoulder-fired heat-seeking missiles had just missed blowing up Marek's plane: the launcher and shell casings were found a mile from the Mombasa airport.

History of Music in Somaliland

by Mohamed and Mohamoud Ahmed Shunuuf

It is difficult to avoid being everywhere. From Harta Sheekh, Hargeisa, Berbera, Burao, the music squeaks and scratches itself out of every restaurant and shop, not even buses, taxis and private cars are safe. To a non-Somali speaking person some of the music must seem unbearable, pscychodelic, weird and indeed to a certain extent the quality of some of the harsher emissions emanating from the omnipresent tape recorders and distorted radios is unbearable. But, this unbearable problem is of reproduction, not music. Any live music by an outstanding Somaliland singer 'Caqaarta' singing and 'Gin' playing the 'Oud' or 'Faysel' singing and 'Xodeydeh' on the 'Oud' will soon convince the untrained listener of the finer qualities of the "Somaliland sound".

Somaliland Music Past and Present

by Mohamed and Mohamoud Ahmed Shunuuf

Music and songs are probably the most emotionally potent forms of human expression. Music conveys intense feelings beyond the power of words and lines, after the printed word has failed. With the introduction of radio, cassette, internet, CD's and recordings, came the chance to communicate words and music to a much wider audience; but the potential of the media to stimulate and enlighten the public has largely been ignored and music has tended to become just another commodity.
