THE FINAL DISMEMBERMENT

Addis Ababa/Jijjiga January 13, 2006 (The Ethiopian Herald/WIC) – The Somali State Health Bureau said that preparations have been underway to carry out a vaccination campaign against polio in woredas bordering Somaliland.

Deputy Bureau Head Dr. Abdulaziz Ibrahim told WIC yesterday that the vaccination campaign would be undertaken in 23 woredas of Shinile, Jijjiga, Degehabur, Warder, Qabridahar, Gode, Afder and Liben zones beginning this month.

He said close to 482,000 children would be vaccinated in the campaign financed and coordinated by the World Health Organization. Though there is no polio in the state due to the sustained vaccination campaigns undertaken, 130 children have been infected in the adjacent neighbouring country, Somaliland , Dr. Abdulaziz revealed.

Carrying out this campaign simultaneously in the woredas is therefore vital in controlling the disease, he added, and called on the woreda administrative bodies, elders and the public to contribute their share for the effectiveness of the campaign.
