London, January 28, 2006 (TheyWorkForYou) – Britain’s Minister of State (Trade), Foreign & Commonwealth Office, Ian Pearson and Secretary of State, Department for International Development, Hilary Ben have been questioned by British MPs Jeremy Corbyn and Kerry McCarthy, about issues concerning Somaliland, and the following are all their written Answers: Foreign And Commonwealth Affairs Somaliland Written answers on 23 Jan 2006 Jeremy Corbyn (Islington North, Lab) Hansard source To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what recent communications he has had with the Government of Somaliland; and if he will make a statement on future relations. Ian Pearson (Minister of State (Trade), Foreign & Commonwealth Office) Hansard source My noble Friend, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Minister for Africa, Lord Triesman of Tottenham, met the Somaliland authorities' Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Edna Adan, on 20 May 2005. During the year he exchanged letters with the Head of the Somaliland authorities, His Excellency Dahir Rayale Kahin, on the London bombings and the Somaliland elections. We acknowledge the progress achieved by Somaliland and hope to help the authorities there to further their democratic and developmental agenda through bilateral and multilateral contributions to aid programmes. International Development Somaliland Kerry McCarthy (Bristol East, Lab) Hansard source To ask the Secretary of State for International Development what assessment he has made of the bilateral demining project in Somaliland in 2004–05. Hilary Benn (Secretary of State, Department for International Development) Hansard source DFID is funding HALO Trust in Somaliland at present to undertake demining and clearance of unexploded ordnance (UXO). £244,000 was provided in 2004–05 and further support of £141,000 is committed for 2005–06. DFID is presently reviewing HALO Trust's latest report of its work. DFID's explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) and demining advisor visited Somaliland in 2003 to review mine action with the Somaliland authorities, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), HALO Trust and other relevant agencies. Although our adviser has not visited the area since then, he is in regular contact with the UNDP about mine action issues in the country. As Somaliland is severely affected by the aftermath of conflict, we continue to take an interest in mine action and UXO clearance and keep the situation under review. International Development Somaliland Kerry McCarthy (Bristol East, Lab) Hansard source To ask the Secretary of State for International Development whether he plans to establish an office of his Department in Somaliland; and if he will make a statement. Hilary Benn (Secretary of State, Department for International Development) Hansard source I do not have any plans to establish an office in Somaliland. Our programme continues to be run from DFID's offices in London and in Nairobi. |
