The Development Routes Of Somaliland

Hargeysa, January 28 2006 (SL) – A high level Ethiopian delegation led by the Minister of Transport and Communication, Mr. Juneydi Sado will visit Somaliland from 28 Jan to 1 Feb 2006.

Close source to the Somaliland ministry of Foreign Affairs says that the delegation will hold talks with the Somaliland government officials regarding the two countries bilateral agreement concerning the use of Berbera port facilities by Ethiopian government.

The source added that the Ethiopian delegation will also discuss with Somaliland officials the transport and injury liabilities caused by vehicles registered in both countries who transport transit cargo and empty containers on behalf of the Ethiopian government.

Since, the first transit cargo belonging to Ethiopian government were undocked at Berbera port back in November last year there has only been one major traffic accident caused by the driver of Somaliland registered vehicle in the district of Harare in Ethiopia where four persons were killed when the driver lost control of the vehicle due to mechanical fault hitting a passerby in the road and three other persons selling fruit nearby.

Although, the insurance company of the vehicle settled all liabilities incurred by the vehicle at the time, nevertheless, the Ethiopian Traffic police in Harare who were conducting an investigation to the accident arrested the driver and placed him in jail. The driver was held for more than a fortnight by the Ethiopian traffic police and only got bail when relatives of the driver deposited 3,000 Birr with Harare magistrate courts.

The Ethiopian delegation is set to arrive by road through the Somaliland side of the border town ‘Togwajale’ 70km west of Hargeysa. The delegation will also visit Berbera and meet port officials and make a tour of the port facilities while there.
