Tripoli, Libya, January 30, 2006 (African News Dimension) – Libya has shut down its embassy in Denmark to protest against the Danish government’s silence over newspaper cartoons deemed offensive to Islam.
According to a Libyan Foreign Ministry statement, Tripoli will also take unspecified “economic measures” against Denmark over 12 cartoons ran by that country’s largest newspaper late last year. Islam considers images of prophets disrespectful and caricatures of them blasphemous.
When the cartoons first appeared in September last year, Arab scholars called for action from their governments to condemn the act. However, Denmark never gave an apology or acknowledged the existing friction.
