Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, January 30, 2006 (ENA) – The World Food Program (WFP) disclosed its plan to carry out humanitarian and development activities with US$220 million during the current year in Ethiopia. Some 440,000 tons of emergency food is required for 2006, it said. Head of Program Department with the WFP, Paul Turnbull told ENA on Friday that 440,000 tons of emergency food, which comprises general relief rations for young children, expectant women and nursing mothers is required for 2006. The emergency food requirement costs around 145 million USD, Turnbull said. "Fortunately, WFP and the Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Agency (DPPA) have substantial carryover stocks and carryover contributions that can cover around 70 percent of the gross requirement." The outstanding requirements, which are estimated to be 116,000 tons can be met through contributions to WFP, the government or to non-governmental organizations, he added. Turnbull recalled that donors had provided much support to emergency food aid operations in the second half of 2005 and much of this was available to address the 2006 requirements. The resources available now in the form of carryover stocks and carryover pledges amount to around 127 million USD, which can cover 70 percent of the emergency food requirements, he indicated. Addressing urgent needs in southeastern parts of the country, covering around two-thirds of the overall relief food requirements, which would be around 1.7 million people as well as improving the possibility of people graduating out of food insecurity through the Productive Safety Net Program are among the overall plan of action set for the current year, he indicated. Targeted supplementary feeding, school feeding, HIV/AIDS prevention, providing support for refugees are also among the overall plan of action, he added. |
