Hargeysa, Somaliland , March 11, 2006 – Drawings depicting Prophet Mohamed (SCW) had been printed in a school textbook meant for grade one pupils. The drawings depicting prophet Mohamed appear in pages 42 and 43 of the Islamic education textbook for the first grade. Islamic religion prohibits the depiction of the prophet Mohamed in any way, shape or form. The textbook was written in Arabic and the two pages in question give account of the prophet’s life as a child and later as a youngman. In page 42, the prophet (SCW) is shown in the image of a shepherd looking after a small flock of sheep and goats. The second image portrays him accompanying his uncle Abu-Talib in a trade expedition to Shaam (present day Syria ). The images were first revealed in a Tuesday story run by the daily Somali language newspaper “Haatuf”. On Thursday the head of the curriculum department of the Somaliland ministry of Education, Abdillahi Yassin (Shaandho) conceded that the images existed. He however he said it was “un-intentional mistake committed by an artist who possessed no knowledge of the Islamic religion.” All textbook for the lower primary grades in Somaliland schools had been printed in Nairobi , Kenya , through donor assistance.
