EDITORIAL

The latest atrocities committed by the militia of Abdillahi Yusuf against innocent Somaliland citizens living near the north easterly border with Somalia provide no reason to pretend that the stage for striking back and quelling aggression hasn’t been reached.

There is no type of aggression that Abdillahi Yusuf’s militia hasn’t yet tried on Somaliland in the last 8 years. Despite being targeted with endless series of provocations carried out by Abdillahi Yusuf’s clan militia which included the unsuccessful attempt to assassinate this country’s president at Las-Anod in December 2002 and the complete invasion and then occupation of Las-Anod in the year that followed, yet Somaliland has always exercised restraint.

Having seen the horrors of war, Somaliland was in no mood to embrace bloodletting. The country was too busy with demobilization, demining, repatriation, rebuilding and democratization to be distracted by Abdillahi Yusuf’s attempts at disrupting such vital nation-building efforts.

Though Somaliland has a long way to go in terms of reconstructing the country’s infrastructure and improving social and economic sectors, however it has achieved most of the formidable tasks shown above, on its own.

Somaliland’s passivity in the face of Abdillahi Yusuf’s destructive behavior can also be partly attributed to this country’s acquiescence to international community’s calls for restraint in the believe that the world rewards those who opt for peace. But the international community has rewarded Abdillahi Yusuf by appointing him the president of Somalia while defying truly the elected government of Somaliland . Not only that. The United Nations, the Italian government and a number of Arab countries are giving him substantial amounts of aid and weapons to enable him pursue his military adventures in Somaliland and Somalia .

The government of president Rayale must exercise its responsibility to liberate its people in eastern Sanag and Sool from the daily repression they expierce in the hands of Abdillahi Yusuf’s militia. If has to forestall the emergence of even a more threatfull security situation at its eastern borders.

Somaliland owes the international community absolutely nothing. The government of this country should move quickly to secure its eastern borders before it’s too late.
