UNESCO Builds New Offices And Classes For Amoud University

By Hashim Goth, BORAMA, Somaliland, March 23, 2006 – The Governor of Somaliland's Awdal region, Mahmoud Sheikh Abdillahi, inaugurated on Wednesday, 22 March 2006, new offices and class facilities built by UNESCO at Amoud University. The new structures include offices for the university president, dean of the Education College and renovation of former dormitories turned into classes. The project, financed by the EU and the Danish International Development Agency, DANIDA, also included the erecting of a statue of the university's logo. Later, Ahmed Abdillahi Bogore, the University's Vice President, thanked the delegates who attended the opening ceremony. In a gathering held at Rays Hotel in Borama after the opening of the news buildings, Bogore said that UNESCO and Amoud were working together in a Secondary Schools Teachers' Training Program executed by the university with the help of UNESCO. "Sixty teachers have graduated from the program so far and have been appointed at secondary schools, while 152 teachers were currently in the program 71 of whom will graduate in the near future," Bogore said. He added that other 81 self-financing students in the students were also studying in the program. Bogore said that the project was collaboration between Somaliland's Education Ministry, Amoud University and UNESCO and was financed by the EU and DANIDA. The University presented an appreciation certificate to the UNESCO representative, Mr. Rod, in recognition of his role in the development of Amoud University. Governor Abdillahi also expressed his gratitude to UNESCO and other organizations such as CBT, African Education, DANIDA and the EU for their assistance. The Chairman of the Amoud Board of Elders, Jama Muhummad, said that Amoud University had an honorary book for people and institutions that extended assistance to Amoud, adding that Mr. Rod's name has been entered in the book. For his part, Mr. Rod said that he was overwhelmed by the hospitality accorded him and his colleague Bol Check. He expressed his thanks to the university management and to the government officials who were present at the ceremony. Earlier, Bogore informed the participants that Prof. Sueliman Ahmed Gulaid, Amound University President, was on a working trip to London along with the dean of the Medical College.
