Hargeysa, Somaliland, May 13, 2006 – A philanthropic organization carrying the name of Somaliland’s late president Mohamed Ibrahim Egal was launched on last Monday in Hargeysa.

Named ‘Egal Foundation’, the charity was founded by the late president’s widow, Kalthum Haji Dahir and some family friends. The Egal Foundation will primarily focus on social issues particularly education.

The launching coincided with the 4 th anniversary of Egal’s death on May 3, 2002.

At a memorial function held at Maansoor Hotel, the chairman of the House of Elders, Saleebaan Mohmud Adan paid tribute to Egal as “a courageous leader who made sure that Somaliland remained intact long after he was gone”.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abdirahman Erro also remembered Egal as a born leader and a statesman.
