Hargeysa, Somaliland, May 27, 2006 – The War Veterans Association “SOOYAAL” will observe today the 17th anniversary of the May 1988 offensive launched by the fighters of the SNM against Siyad Barre’s forces in Buroa and Hargeysa.

SNM fighters stormed Buroa on May 27, 1988 and 3 days later attacked Hargeysa. By August 1988, the SNM was driven out of both Buroa and Hargeysa.

However at least 2/3 of Somaliland’s territory fell into the hands of the SNM.

The SNM Mujahideen laid siege to Hargeysa and on January 1991 won a final and total victory against Siyad Barre’s forces.
