Hargeysa, Somaliland, July 1, 2006 (SL Times) – The summit meeting of African heads of states which opens today in Banjul, Gambia, will not consider Somaliland’s application for membership of the African Union.
The African Foreign ministers who met ahead of the summit decided to drop the subject of Somaliland’s membership off the agenda in order to head off threats from Arab countries such as Egypt and Sudan to boycott the conference if the Somaliland issue was raised.
Somaliland minister of Information Abdillahi Mohamed Duale and minister of Finance, Awil Ali Duale are currently in Banjul.
The two ministers are already drawing fire from the public for not seizing the opportunity to talk about Somaliland’s case through the African and international media representatives covering the Banjul Summit.
