Helsinki, June 27, 2006 – Finland's Directorate of Immigration released its updated country report on Somalia on Tuesday. According to the report, the deportation of asylum seekers to Somalia is only permitted in isolated cases.
The Directorate holds that southern and central Somalia no longer constitute war zones, thus Finnish residence permits cannot be awarded on this basis. Asylum seekers from Somaliland or Puntland can be deported in the event that they do not have grounds for asylum or residence in Finland.
Since opportunities to leave the country are relatively scarce, the Directorate has decided not to deport any asylum seekers from central or southern Somalia for the time being. Instead, they will continue to award temporary residence permits.
