Nairobi, Kenya, July 11, 2006 – President Mwai Kibaki and President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda have expressed concern at the deteriorating situation in Somalia and urged parties involved in the Somali conflict to resolve it without resorting to violence.

During discussions held at State House Nairobi on Monday, the two leaders further called upon the international community to support efforts being undertaken by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to resolve the conflict in Somalia.

President Museveni, the chairman of the East African Regional Initiative also briefed President Kibaki about the progress made so far about the internal peace process in Burundi.

The two Heads of State urged the parties to the Burundi conflict to reach an amicable solution.

On the East African Community, Presidents Kibaki and Museveni expressed their satisfaction with the implementation of the East Africa Customs Union and reiterated their commitment towards fast-tracking the Political Federation.

The two leaders noted with satisfaction the progress being made towards the admission of the Republic of Burundi and Rwanda to the East African Community.

They expressed concern at the recent severe drought noting it had affected the levels of waters of Lake Victoria and resulted into power shortages in the region. They agreed to cooperate in the alleviation of the problem.

President Museveni briefed President Kibaki on the progress of the preparation of the forthcoming Commonwealth Heads of State and Government (CHOGM) summit, which Uganda will host in 2007.

President Kibaki welcomed the event and expressed readiness of the Government of Kenya to support the Government of Uganda towards successful hosting of the summit.

Kenya and Uganda have been cooperating for many years in various sectors of the economy particularly in the energy, transport and communication.
