New Delhi, July 26, 2006 – A forum of India's leading Muslim organizations has protested the 'invasion' of Somalia by Ethiopia and urged the UN to intervene for restoring peace in the war-torn country.

'The All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM) has taken serious note of the invasion of Somalia by Ethiopia which is totally contrary to international law constitutes an act of unjustifiable aggression,' AIMMM president Syed Shahabuddin said in a statement.

'The AIMMM demands that the UN Security Council orders Ethiopia to pull out immediately or face sanctions,' said the statement by AIMMM, an apex forum of Indian Muslim organizations set up over four decades ago.

'The AIMMM reiterates its call to the UN to intervene effectively for the formation of a representative government in Somalia and for the restoration of peace.'

Ethiopian troops rolled into the Somali town of Baidoa last week to 'protect' Somalia's transitional government from attack by Islamic militias who control much of southern Somalia.

The Supreme Islamic Courts Council militia seized Somali capital Mogadishu and much of southern Somalia last month. The US suspects that the militia has links with Al Qaeda that include sheltering suspects in the 1998 bombings of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.
