The Theory of Backwardness and Somalia/Somaliland Political Stage

By Professor Abdisalam Yassin Mohamed

Although the sea is part of the world (i.e. part of planet Earth), for the purpose of my argument, I will say that the world is like the sea. The sea, we all know, has different levels, different depths, and different colors. For example, there is a rough and rocky place near the shore. There is a sandy and beautiful beach. And there is a place where sewage and chemical waste is deposited. How you find the sea will therefore depend on which part of it you dwell.

If, for example, you happen to land at a place where there is sewage and waste, you will judge the sea as a polluted, ugly, and uninhabitable place. But as I mentioned earlier, there are other places in the sea. There is the deep blue sea, which is clean, fresh, and beautiful. Anyone who goes down into the deep blue sea will find it different from the polluted shore.

The sea also has corals, mountains, pearls, plants, and of course all kinds of fish in its bosom. Divers who extract pearls from the bosom of the sea find it a rich provider. In contrast, those who collect corals and rocks from it find it a poor provider. Those who encounter sharks and other marine predators as they descend in it find it a dangerous place that should be avoided.

The world is also like that. What you get from it depends on where you choose to stay. If you decide to stay near the polluted but safe shore, you get only pollution. If, however, you set sail in the deep blue sea where there is turbulence and danger but where there are also its riches, you will find it clean, fresh, and giving.

Consequently, the reward you get from the sea depends on the decision and the risk you take. The higher the determination and the risk, the higher the gains acquired. What you get is what you choose! Let us choose to go down into the deep blue sea, i.e. into the depths of our resources (both human and natural) and dig out the bounties hidden in them.
