BOOK REVIEW: LADH

By Hassan Ahmed

The Rapidly changing political climate of the eastern African region has hit both a new high and a new low. As developments in Somalia show the dangers that are attributed with a failed state and in particular the rise of the “Islamic influence” are too great to ignore. The rise of the Islamic courts or the conservative union of Islamic courts as they now wish to be known have ended the element of the TFG or what was left of it. It has simplified the political equation and has reduced the TFG and its supporters dream of forcibly retaking what was once known as Somalia as a long distant dream which will never materialize. However the Islamic militia have many faults of their own, they are a group of disorganized courts with deferent interpretations of the Islamic faith some courts are more radical than the others, as recent events show the public stoning of men accused of adultery, the man stabbed for his crimes in a public square, the shooting and kidnap of journalists, along with other acts which remind most of us of Afghanistan during the period of the Taliban. The facts are a nation can not be ruled by 7 different courts which all interpret life differently, as the Islamic militia have shown they are disorganized and are in no way capable or have the intelligence to run a country. Although they have removed the warlords and brought some form of normality for the people of Somalia which can only be a good thing, they lack the vision and knowledge of a modern state. The Islamic militia guising themselves behind the banner of Islam in essence controlled more land than the warlords and inflicted an equal amount of suffering on the people, it has been reported that they have more illegal farms than warlords.

Having said all above, they restored peace and some kind of temporary discipline.

However, their presence in the power is endangering the country to an avoidable International force which may turn into another Afghanistan on the horn.
