ORSOD convention

Hargeysa, Somaliland, October 14, 2006 (SL Times) – A popular youth organization named ORSOD (Organization of Research and Social Dev.) has held a convention with the help of the established institute of IPRT in Hargeysa at the venue of Maansoor Hotel.

The convention’s objective was to speak about the relationship between the members of Somaliland’s house of representatives and the common public who were responsible for electing them and what kind of communication mechanism exists between them. ORSOD decided to bring together a number of highly ranked parliamentarians as well as delegates from civil society organizations that were there as representatives for the general public of Somaliland.

As the convention took place on this past Tuesday night, it was attended by many of Somaliland’s well-known intellectuals, parliamentarians, politicians and civil society leaders, but was in majority was filled with women and youth.

The convention began with the opening remarks stated by the 2nd Deputy chairman of the House of Representatives Bashe Maxamed (Cadde) who gave a brief comment on the relationship that exists now between the house of representatives and the citizens of Somaliland, and that although he believes there is a good rapport between the two, there is probably more that could be done.

Ahmed Bashe the chairman of ORSOD who gave a brief up-to-the point speech on why he and his organization had decided to hold this convention then followed Dep. Chairman Basshe, this is a direct quote of what he said “ Ladies and Gentlemen, it is not only a solemn duty upon us, to try to find a beneficial communication mechanism between the house of representatives and we, the people of Somaliland, but it’s what every society needs to continue living in our present day, for let it be known that without a doubt, every society progresses on the basis of idea exchange and the partaking in the decision-making process by the general public, this in turn produces good governance and a democratic state of being”. He was then trailed by Dr. Ahmed Essa (Ahmed Essa’s institute IPRT was partly responsible for the implementation of this convention as IPRT generously agreed to pay the total cost of the conventions expenses) and three other parliamentarians; who were MP. Maxamed H. Maxamuud Omer Hashi, MP. Cali Obsiiye Diiriye ( Cali Gabiley) and MP. Saleebaan Ali Koore. As the convention progressed, these three parliamentarians and three civil society leaders (Aamina Milgo Executive Director of NAGAAD Umbrella, Mustafe Kheyre ED of SONYO Umbrella and Prof. Aden Haji Ali from the University of Hargeysa) faced off, each giving a speech and towards the end participating in an entertaining public discussion. At the end of the convention, to cap a wonderful night, ORSOD decided to release the outcome of the conference then and there, while promising to distribute a more personalized version to each and every participant of the convention as well as providing dinner and drinks to the participants.
