Hargeysa, Somaliland, November 3, 2006 – In 2006 the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) celebrates its 50 years anniversary as a private, independent organization. It is DRC’s aim to protect refugees against persecution and to grant direct assistance to refugees and internally displaced persons in conflict areas and speaks their cause internationally and in Denmark.

DRC was established following the Hungarian upraise in 1956. A large number of refugees fled from Hungary to different countries in Europe including Denmark. As a consequence DRC was established in November 1956 by a number of voluntary and humanitarian organizations in order to assist in the reception of the Hungarian refugees and to help them while in Denmark.

Since then DRC has developed in to a large organization addressing refugee issues both domestically and internationally.

In Denmark DRC is involved in a wide range of activities supporting refugees: Assistance in integration processes, support to individuals by a voluntary network and advocating refugees rights. DRC is also participating in the Danish asylum procedure.

Internationally DRC has developed in to a large humanitarian organization contributing to the protection and sustainable solutions to refugees and internally displaced persons in 23 countries all over the world.
