Hargeysa, Somaliland, December 9, 2006 (SL Times) – Some of Somaliland’s top artists were concerned enough about the subversive activities of some people in Somaliland, it prompted the artists to issue a statement in which they made clear their strong opposition to anyone who tries to harm Somaliland’s peace, progress and sovereignty. Among other things, the statement said, “We have been hearing for a while about some people who want Somalilanders to follow a path that is not in Somaliland’s interest. For example, if they hear that a government was formed in Nigeria, they will immediately say we support that government or we will join it, when in fact their real objective is to undermine Somaliland’s peace and sovereignty.” The artists put such people on notice, and emphasized that they are ready to defend Somaliland both verbally (through their art) and physically from anyone who tries to harm its peace or sovereignty.

Somaliland ’s artists have always been at the forefront of the struggle to liberate it from its oppressors, and this statement shows that they know the forces conniving against the country and are ready to face them.

The signatories of the statement were:

1. Cabdi Maxamed Jaamac
2. Faadumo C/Laahi Kaahin (Maandeeq)
3. Ruun Xadi Saban
4. Maxamed Cige Busi
5. Maxamed Cismaan
6. Canab Diiriye Ileeye
7. Maxamed Miyir Xaaji.
