Human remains found in mass graves in Buroa. All victims were executed, shot in the head as can be seen in this picture.

Buroa, Somaliland. December 16, 2006 (SL Times) – New mass genocide graves were discovered last Thursday by locals in north-east Buroa, regional capitol of Togdheer region.

Buroa police were informed by locals living in the area where these mass graves were discovered. Locals said recent heavy rains unearthed mass graves containing large amounts of human remains.

Muhammad Aden Dhagalab, the mayor of Buroa informed the local media in a press conference held in his office last Thursday shortly after returning from a visit he made to the area. He said, “He saw two large sites containing hundreds of human remains’. He said, “Along with human bones, there were hundreds of bits of strewn cloths buried in these sites.

The mayor of Buroa said, “We are greatly disturbed by these local finds, we have always known all along that there were large mass graves in and around Buroa, these graves were the killing fields for the Siad Barre forces. Many of the victims were men belonging to the SNM clans”. Muhammad Aden, the mayor of Buroa said we plan to rebury the victims of Siad Barre's atrocities, giving them back the dignity on which Allah bestowed on all Muslims, the Islamic rite burial.

Throughout much of Somaliland, mass graves have been discovered containing the remains of thousands of Said Barre victims. Majority of these victims were murdered in 1988 when the SNM forces invaded Somaliland. Up to this day, there has not been a single figure of Said Barre’s regime charged or brought to account before a court of law in Somaliland or indicted by the Interntional Court of the Hague, in Netherlands. Many perpetrators of these heinous crimes against humanity are currently either in the Embagathi parliament of Somalia and in the cabinet of the TFG. Many are also, serving in the Union of Islamic Courts parading as clerics.
