Bristol-UK, February 8, 2007– IT equipment and furniture which was until recently used in local council offices is now on its way to a new life in a secondary school in Somaliland.

Bristol City Council staff have joined forces with the John Kelly Boys Technology College in London to fill a container with IT equipment, desks and books for dispatch to the school in Somaliland's capital of Hargeisa.

Twenty three pre-used computers and monitors, 2 printers and a number of computer tables and desks will be setting off on Thursday 8 February. Once the container is boarded onto the freight ship it will take approximately 4 weeks for the equipment to reach its new location in Hargeisa.

Steve Comer, Executive Member for Central Services and Customer Excellence, comments: "We are absolutely delighted to be able to donate this equipment to the school in Somaliland, where many educational establishments are under-resourced. We hope the pupils and staff alike get much enjoyment and use out of the equipment and we are hoping that this will be the start of a longer-tern dialogue between the council and the school."

Teachers at the school, called '26th June' after the country's day of independence, have promised to send back photos so that city council staff can get an insight into daily school life for the Somalian students.
