Watch Your Language, Mr. Spokesman

ISSUE 265

By Ahmed H. Ismail In a press release dated 2nd February 2007, the spokesman of the president Mr. Abdi Dualeh referred the name of Samaroon clan directly 3 times and more than this on indirect way. I repeat reading the release number of times and couldn't believe it until I found the paper were officially distributed to all the country news channels including the BBC Somali service. What is that ; an official statement from the country white house is picking up a clan name just to clear its position and deny a news article appeared in local newspaper on campaign lead by the President to down the chairman of the elder house Mr. Suleiman Mohamoud. Its indeed disappointing; what happened to the political language of our president and his crew? how can the spokesperson of the president stand up and distribute a press release having contents including; “Waa mid ku waajahan cid gaar ah, waa cunsuriyad qabyaaladeed, beesha Samaroon ayaa lagu takoorayaa, ku jiqsii ayaa ka danbaysa," and so on wording that can not even be used in chatting and qatting sessions. The government has all the rights to defend itself and deny any untrue story published in local newspapers, but referring to a clan name in an official document is not the proper language for the government official documents. Such statement will only cause suspicions among the people of one nation, I don't think the most pessimistic Somalilander expected to see such messy statement issued from the president’s office. The responsibility of the government is to seriously study any critics coming from its nation and to cool down the situation in a diplomatic manner, not to say and say with the local newspapers, what Mr. Duale distributed will only give more opportunity for the newspapers to comment and analyze in between its lines. Every healthy mind will have too many clarifications by reading quotes like “Sow sideenii gacanta isula tega maaha" in a position paper issued from country ruling house, I am sure many Somalilanders were also shocked reading that. The silent majority of Somalilanders are waiting to see the day when the political language of their government will grow up to the level of their ambitions and stop the meaningless tit for tat with every who and who comes. Our Awdalian brothers should not also allow the government to misuse their great name as rescue facility and weapons to defend itself, they need to pick up their pens and ask the government not to utilize their honorable name as a tool for the government’s propagandas and its hidden political agendas. In conclusion, I may disagree with the local newspaper for their unprofessional analyzes in some of the national issues, but what concerns me more is how the government handles the day-to- day's issues disregard of its size. God bless Somaliland ahmh_ism@yahoo.com
