Kuwait, 24 March 2007 - Kuwait has decided to refuse the shipment and ban sheep imports from Somalia, the Kuwait's official KUNA news agency reported on Friday.

The decision was made upon a newly detected foot and mouth disease infection in a shipment of live sheep from the eastern African country, said KUNA.

Held at the veterinary quarantine under the Public Authority for Agriculture and Fish Resources (PAAFR), some sheep were conducted clinical tests which proved positive infection with foot and mouth, Abdullah al-Mehailbi, Minister of State for Municipalities, was quoted by KUNA as saying.

The PAAFR therefore decided to return the consignment and notified the customs departments nationwide to ban the import of any sheep from Somalia in the future pending further notice, added the report.
