Mubarak reiterates Egypt's support to Palestinian Authority

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Saturday said that Egypt supports the legitimate position of the Palestinian Authority and President Mahmoud Abbas and his government.

Mubarak made the remarks in an address to the ruling National Democratic Party's bloc inside the Shura Council (the upper house of the Parliament), noting that Egypt fully recognizes the perils lying beneath the current tumultuous Middle East situation.

"Egypt is doing its utmost to contain the complicated problems all across it in Lebanon, in Iraq, the Gulf region, Darfur and Somalia so as to establish regional stability and protect its own national security," Mubarak said.

Efforts to contain a humanitarian crisis in Gaza will top the agenda of his summit talks with Abbas, Jordanian King Abdullah II and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to be held in Sharm el- Sehikh on Monday, he added.

Mubarak reiterated Egypt's never-ceasing commitment to the Palestinian cause, promising that Egypt will never abandon the Palestinians at the time of need.

Asserting that the Palestinian infighting should never deflect attention from the root causes behind the current escalations, the Egyptian president called for the resumption of the peace march to reach a just and all-out settlement that restores right to its owners and puts an end to occupation.

The region will continue to suffer and terrorism and extremism will continue to grow so long as peace remains an elusive dream, Mubarak warned.

Last week, Islamic Hamas movement militarily took control of all the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) security headquarters, including Abbas' headquarters in the Gaza Strip.

In response, Abbas dissolved Haneya's national unity government and decreed to form an emergency government in the West Bank. Abbas refused to hold any talks with either Ismail Haneya or other Hamas political leaders.

Gaza Strip now remains in the grip of Hamas movement, while the West Bank is fully controlled by Abbas and Fatah movement. The Arab league has formed an inquiry committee to investigate the Palestinian crisis.
