Hargeysa, July 6, 2007 (SL Times) – Nagaad women umbrella group of local Ngo’s inaugurated its 10th anniversary on 24/06/2007 at Maansoor hotel in Hargeysa.
Somaliland Vice President Ahmed Yusuf Yaasiin, the chairman of KULMIYE opposition party Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud Silanyo, as well as other dignitaries and guests of honour marked Nagaad’s 10 years of dedication for championing women related issues and development projects and programs for Somaliland women and children.
The Excutive Chairman of NAGAAD, Amina H. Mohamoud Warsame, spoke at the ceremony. She pointed out that her organization went from a single room office, to having their own complex offices. She explained how they faced many obstacles, but finally overcame them all.
Amina H. Mohamoud Warsame said in her speech that when this umbrella group was formed, they had no idea that it would expand to becoming the largest women’s umbrella group in Somaliland and probably in Somalia and Djibouti, too.
Somaliland Vice-President, Ahmed Yusuf Yasin also spoke at the ceremony and said that Somaliland Women should be given a quota in parliament and the local councils, but before that can happen, the national constitution will have to be amended.
NAGAAD’s foundation was established in 1997 by the many Somaliland women’s groups and Ngo’s already working in Somaliland.
NAGAAD exhibited in its 10th anniversary celebrations all the projects undertaken and successfully implemented in the country by the umbrella group since its formation 10 years ago, these being projects and programs in environmental issues, human rights and women empowerment, democratization processes and issues, poverty reduction schemes and initiatives, adult higher learning and family care.
