Hargeysa, September 22, 2007 (SL Times) – Somaliland Examination Board yesterday announced the results of Somaliland’s intermediate and secondary schools examination. The results were announced in a press conference held by the minister of education and the national examination board Thursday morning. Speaking to the press, Somaliland Minister of Education, Mr Hassan Mohamoud Warsame (Gadhweyne) said, “It is my pleasure that the ministry of education today is announcing the national examination results. Even though we experienced difficulties and delays to the outcome of the examinations, nonetheless, we managed to finally complete all the results, and this was thanks to the hard work and determination of the national examination board. I am sending my congratulations to the students and their parents as well as the ministry of education as whole, for the efforts they put into executing this tremendous task and for encouraging the students to achieve excellent marks and grades.” Speaking of the examination, the Chairman of Somaliland Examination Board, Da’ud Ahmed Farah, said, “the number of students who sat for the high school examination were 2386, which is an increase of 21. 3% compared to last year’s number of 1917 students. The students scheduled this year were 2468, but 82 of them were registered absent. This year the national examination board implemented a new system of grading of 12 marks, which were based on the A level standard for eight subjects, or 12X8 = 96 marks. The highest marks of both high school and intermediate students in the country were both from Hargeysa region, according to the results of the national examination board.” The following table states the top ten students of Somaliland intermediate schools. Even though Hargeysa had the highest top ten students, it also had the highest level of illegal entries that the national examination board registered. On the other hand, the highest marks for a female student in the country came from Awdal region. It is the 11 th examination of Somaliland’s intermediate schools since the rebirth of Somaliland in 1991. Approximately 29,000 students have graduated from intermediate school since 1995, since the first students sat for national examination in 1991 and the 9 th examination of the secondary school student from 1991 and in total 8000 students graduated from secondary schools since 1999, when the first secondary school student’s examination was made national throughout the country. Only 1% of the secondary school students failed to pass the exam. This is the lowest level in the history of Somaliland.
