BOSTON, October 17, 2007 - Two teens have pleaded guilty in the slaying of a 19-year-old youth who escaped with his family from war-torn Somalia only to be gunned down as he left a city park near his home.

Sixteen-year-old Eloy Sierra, of Randolph, and 17-year-old Mwase Potts, of Boston, pleaded guilty to manslaughter, assault with intent to kill and a gun charge in the killing of Abdirauf Abdullahi on June 25, 2006.

Prosecutors say Sierra and Potts were riding their bikes in Boston’s South End when they saw Abdullahi and a friend leaving Peter’s Park. Police said Sierra pulled out a gun and fired five shots at Abdullahi.

Suffolk Superior Court Judge Frank Gaziano sentenced Sierra to 19 to 20 years. Potts was sentenced to 9 to 10 years.

Abdullahi and his family escaped Somalia and came to Boston in 1996. At the time of his killing, he had just graduated from Concord-Carlisle High school and was planning to attend West Virginia’s University of Charleston.
