By Yassin Ismail, UK Puntland communities in the Diaspora stepped up massive awareness and fundraising campaigns to support their government’s bid to recapture the beleaguered town of Las Anod in the eastern province of Somaliland. The town was recently taken over by the Somaliland military following a decisive military victory in which Somaliland troops have ousted the Majeertenia militia who previously occupied the town. Prominent members of Majertenia community in London, including elders and politicians held a meeting in London’s Camden town area during the weekend, which was attended exclusively by members of the Majeerteen clan family. According to sources close to the organizers the meeting was intended to raise awareness amongst the Majeerten community and coordinate their support and financial contributions towards ‘the war effort’ against Somaliland. Individuals who participated in the meeting have openly admitted that this meeting was part and parcel of international campaign to raise money for Puntland military and support the ongoing military preparations to launch massive attacks on Somaliland troops who have recently took over the town of Las Anod from Puntland militia. Similar fundraising activities are already being carried out in other parts of the World, particularly in the US. Last week, the president of the semi-autonomous administration of Puntland, Mr. Adde Muse dressed in military uniform called upon all Puntland citizens, including women and civil societies to add their contributions to what he called ‘the defense of the Harti territories from aggressors.’ He urged women to help the military, cook the food and tend to the injury. This coincided last week the return of columns of Puntland’s military troops who left Mogadishu and made their way to Somalia’s Northeastern region of Majeertenia presumably to reinforce the remnants of Puntland militia ousted from Las Anod in what appears to be a massive regrouping exercise to take Las Anod back. In the meantime Somaliland communities in Diaspora are yet to decide what actions they would take in response to Majeertenia’s ethnic-driven campaign to undermine the sovereignty of Somaliland territories despite the clear indications that Puntland is preparing an all out war in our eastern frontiers. |
