Somaliland and the press law

By Dr. Abdi E. Obseyeh, Borama

During regional competitive tournament the BBC reporter had an interview with Borama district Mayor Mr.,Abdirahman Shide who told him what he had seen at Hargeysa stadium before his team arrived at the site. “I have seen many gangs who were holding big axes, knives and long sticks in the stadium” the mayor reported. On that same afternoon the reporter had an interview with the Minister of Sports and youth of Somaliland Mr. Mahamud who told him “that every thing was quiet and nothing of this type was expected”.

Regional competitive tournament teams are of course very useful in many ways:-Each team gets the opportunity to gain experience and other tactical skills. They benefit to interact each other (socialize themselves) so as to make visits between them in the future. This type of interaction among them can facilitate the visits of school children. But if there arises unnecessary conflicts and arguments among our official authorities it will devaluate the inspirations of our regional teams. Again this type of issue can create antisocial among our school children.

Unfortunately no body told my minister of sport and youth his wrong doings and may be he lapsed that he is the minister of all Somaliland regions. Those who don’t care such issues must know that they are indifferent any good remarks. Shame!! The next 5 and 6 th day that followed was a gentleman’s game since the Regional high authorities of Awdal region, the sultans and the community elders had prepared an honorable lunch at Rays hotel to the sport team. After the lunch the regional authorities and the community elders had delivered short speeches of suggestions and advices to the sport team. “feed the people what I had fed you, It will be up to them if they want to change their habits”. Concluded one of the community elders. The young players seemed unable to refuse since the impact of this incident “Trauma” could stay with them a long time.

Just in about 2-3 week’s time a high delegation of over seven ministries and 2 mayors (Hargeysa and Gabiley) headed by the minister of interior had visited Borama to apologize the sport team for the awful activities in which some gangsters of Hargeysa had backed up during the regional competitive tournament. The regional authorities, the community elders and the sport team regained special feeling of sympathy and love when the visiting Ministries and the mayors confirmed the truth and apologized the team players the evil doings at Hargeysa stadium. “The report which the minister of sport and youth gave the BBC was all a lie” whispered one of the community elders in surprise. “Are we like blind Persons who are unable to see the reality? how can we know when something is true or wishful fantasy?” Something precious was been destroyed in minutes but again my minister didn’t care. The team had at last realized that they hadsome one who can protect them and can put things right when others went wrong.

Good , the pain had gone and amazingly the wound had healed leaving only tiny scar. In psychology, when a child grows he desires to get the approval of the Society when he does a good thing, unfortunately, my minister of sport and Youth played the wrong card when he turned away his head from the real screen and pretended not to see!!.

Finally, I suggest to respecting the rules of a Muslim and this means, we have to learn to be honest and worship Allah.

Our prophet(scw) told us that “those who deceive us can not be among us”. May Allah Lead our high official authorities to fairness and good judgment!!!
