I read Abdifatah's article 'Education Industry booms in Somaliland' with interest and whilst it is true that there more and more schools opening every day, it is also important to mention that many of these schools are Quranic. The sad thing with Somaliland education is that there is no consistency of what is taught in these schools. There are many Islamic schools which do not even teach Somali language.

Yes, we are Muslims and we need to learn our religion but our culture is equally important. If not even more important. And besides, children need to be prepared for future and taught basic subjects so that they can later go to higher education. I am sorry to say but there are schools (and there are many of them) that are preparing future fundamentalists.

What the government of Somaliland needs to do is to regulate these schools and subject them to some kind of regular inspections. One thing that definitely needs to be made compulsory in the education system is that every school should teach Somali Language and the basic subjects of science and math’s. And one more thing, they should all sing the National Anthem in the mornings during school assembly.

I am a Somalilander engineer currently working in Bahrain and I'm going to Somaliland soon and education is one area in which I have a keen interest. Once I get there I will certainly try to gather as much information on the subject as possible and I will share my findings with you by sending an article to Awdalnews.
