Buroa city mayor, M. Hassan and Mr. Van Der Plas of Habitat opening the new market in Buroa

Buroa, Somaliland, December 22, 2007 (SL Times) – The Mayor of Buroa, Mohamud Ahmed Hassan formally opened on Sunday the new Buroa Meat and Produce complex. The complex which as has been under construction in Buroa for the past year will provide facilities in two separate market halls for traders and their customers.

This new market complex, which consists of two main halls, has been funded partly by the Buroa Municipality, local traders, the United Nations Habitat, UNDP and the International Labor Organization.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mayor Ahmed Hassan stated that the facility will provide retail opportunities for more than 2,000 local meat and produce traders. The construction of the market complex has been estimated at $160,000 US Dollars.

Also speaking at the opening ceremony was Mr. Marco van der Plas from the UN-Habitat agency who stated that the Buroa Market Complex is the first one in a series of six similar complexes to be constructed across Somaliland in the coming year. 

Mr. Van Der Plas also remarked that the completion of this project is a prototype for other cities and towns in Somaliland who undertake similar projects and will have a profound effect on the development of the community.   

Abdi Abokor Yusuf representing the local office of the International Labor Organization pointed out the goals of the complex “is to improve both food hygiene and to play a significant role in improving the local environment.” The construction of the market complex was undertaken and completed in time by the indigenous VCC construction company.
