To the Editor:
As a Djiboutian-American I couldn't help but take your editorial with a grain of salt. The people of Djibouti always had and will always have a great affinity for the people in northern Somalia . There is a historical tie that go back hundreds of generations between the people of the Republic of Djibouti and northern Somalia . That tie always binds us as "one" people. All we ask of our brethrens to the south is sort out your problems and become a nation of governance and transparency.
Having said that, I would like to direct you to the naked aggression of Eritrea toward Djibouti . While I feel empathy for the Eritrean people, I have nothing but contempt for their leadership. They know nothing but war and have basically started wars with all their neighbors! Perhaps aggression is in the DNA of their leadership. But let us make one thing clear, Djibouti will defend its territorial integrity by any means necessary. I am proud to say that the Djibouti military did a superb job in repelling and removing the Eritreans from Djibouti soil. I am, however, saddened by the fact that we have lost 20 young brave men who were martyred during the two/three days of fighting. Casualties on the aggressors side by some accounts were in the hundreds dead and wounded. Let this be a lesson to any and all aggressors that Djibouti will and can defend its borders.
