The London-based Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) was voted "Think Tank of the Year 2008" at Prospect magazine's 8th annual award ceremony held at King's College in London on 6 October 2008. RUSI, known for its global reputation, was given this prestigious award for "deploying expertise, research and a new rigour in an impressive set of publications and policy interventions."

Prof Iqbal Jhazbhay of Unisa's Department of Religious Studies was invited to address a RUSI Conference in London on the crisis in the Horn of Africa. Prof Jhazbhay's presentation was entitled " Somaliland and regional stability in the Horn". UK Ministry of Defence personnel, Africom and NATO staff, security analysts, academics, representatives from embassies, NGO staff and journalists were present at this well-attended conference.
