Bristol, Jan 17, 2009 – Office questions on January 13, 2009, Kerry raised concerns that other countries were taking advantage of the political situation in Somalia to dump toxic waste and carry out over-fishing in Somali seas.
Kerry told the Foreign Office minister that she shared the concerns that had been raised earlier in the Chamber about piracy off the Horn of Africa, but was also concerned about reports that nuclear waste is being dumped offshore, and other countries are fishing in Somali waters. It has been reported that this is one of the reasons why piracy has grown in the area<http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/johann-hari/johann-ha ri-you-are-being-lied-to-about-pirates-1225817.html> .
The Minister replied that the UN taskforce being established to see what could be done about piracy off the Horn of Africa was also going to be looking at this issue. Another MP, Clive Betts, asked a question about independence for Somaliland, urging the Foreign Office to make the case for recognition. In view of her response, which cast doubt on the level of support for independence in Somaliland, Kerry and Clive - who visited Somaliland together in 2007 - spoke to the Foreign Office minister after questions finished, telling her that there was in fact widespread support. She has promised to report this back to officials at the Foreign Office and her colleague, the Minister for Africa.
