Burao, January 17, 2009 -
A foreign teacher working in Somaliland was released Thursday after
spending days in captivity.
Mohamed Mustafa al-Khawi, an Egyptian working in Somaliland for over a
decade, was kidnapped by gunmen Tuesday afternoon in Burao.
He taught at a Burao school and was the prayer-caller at a local mosque,
which prompted hundreds of supporters and students to call for his
immediate and unconditional release, locals sources reported.
Traditional elders and Somaliland security forces took part in efforts
to seek the safe release of the hostage, according to Togdher Governor
Jama Abdillahi Binn, who condemned the kidnapping.
Mr. Al-Khawi was released unharmed and told reporters that he was
treated well by the kidnappers, who have not been brought to justice.
This is the first time this sort of things had happened in Somaliland,
kidnapping, piracy and hostage taking is usually the daily image of
Puntland and Somalia.
