Somaliland president congratulates Iranian president and scientists
Hargeysa, Somaliland, February 4, 2009 President of Somaliland Dahir R Kahin sent his congratulations on Tuesday to Iran's aerospace scientists and the current president of Iran Ahmadinejad after the safe and successful launch of communications satellite Omit ('Hope') into orbit.
In his message, Kahin noted the immense need of Middle East and Africa for 'modest access to communications technologies' to cater for the growing telecom and communications market currently serviced and supplied at higher rates.
Omid lifted off half an hour after the daily sunset prayer called Maghrib from its launch pad having been well ahead of the scheduled launch by almost four weeks. In 2008, Iran announced future plans to send man into space within the next ten years.
Somaliland president himself survived a vote of confidence by his political party on the same day, continuing his chairmanship for the second term. His country is set to hold presidential elections this year as it enters its 18th anniversary since Somaliland declared unilateral independence from former Somali Democratic Republic.
